History Of Massage Therapy 5

In 1776, renowned French missionaries Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and Pierre-Martial Cibot translated Huangdi Neijing, the famous medical book in Chinese including the massage techniques that were used by the culture and brought everything back in France. This way, they introduced in Europe, systems of medicine that were almost unknown to Europeans including the massage techniques that were used in China.

By the 1800s, medicine was evolved and started being more formalized. Massage therapy was studied by nurses who were in training in John Kellogg’s nursing school. A book called The Art of Massage was used and nurses learned how to help patience with their pain or help them relax and sleep by massaging them.

Around 1800s, the term medical massage appeared and a lot of treaties on the body anatomy and massage were written. Medical massage focused on certain diseases and disorders where symptoms were alleviated with the help of massage.

Massage was one of the therapies used to treat female hysteria and this proves that its benefits went beyond people’s bodies as it also managed to calm the mind.

In Victorian times, spas started gaining popularity. Turkish baths and therapies that involved the use of water made massage one of their main tools. With people in need for various medical treatments, it began being extremely popular in all social classes.

By the early 1900s, sports massage was a very important part of the medical world and people were looking to improve their physical appearance by using this type of treatment. There was a massage system for running athletes as it provided great benefits. The need for a scientific approach to sports massage grew and massage soon became a part of every athlete’s training.

Sports massage was a great way for athletes to improve their joint functions but also to increase their resistance while playing sports which made them better players. It was common knowledge that those who wanted an advantage on their competition had to undergo sports massage treatment.
