History Of Massage Therapy 2

In ancient Asia, massage has been used even since 3000BC and was designed to be applied on particular points on the body to help restore health and even for stress management. In Japan, the same thing happened and massage therapy was even improved there to include the application of deep pressure to some points of the body. This helped with various conditions but also added a lot of benefit to the general health.

In India travelers came with the knowledge of massage from Chinese writings and it was rapidly incorporated in their culture. Indian healers used Ayrveda to promote mental and physical balance.

It was a traditional holistic medical system that was adopted throughout India and Southeast Asia that was based on creating a balanced life. People who were not in harmony with some aspects of their lives became diseased. For their healing, individuals had to use a number of medical practices including massage.

With Japan starting to import traditional Chinese medicine around 1000BC, it managed to develop its own massage techniques, one of them being Shiatsu. This type of massage was intended to raise the person’s energy level and stimulate all natural healing properties of their own body.

Physicians from Ancient Greece also used massage and it was mentioned as early as 460 BC. One of the most well-known ancient doctors, Hippocrates, wrote about the benefits of this practice and even considered that a physician had to be well versed in massage in order to be a good doctor.

He considered that massage was one of the most important therapeutic methods and in combination with various ointments he often prescribed it to his patients. He promoted massage to firm the muscles, or even relax them, but also for joints and aching parts of the body.

He also had another important role in the history of massage and the history of medicine: he managed to separate medicine from ancient superstitions and folklore. Before him, shamans used a form of massage such as stroking the limbs or rubbing the extremities to banish evil spirits from the body.

Hippocrates had another approach, a more scientific one and created a list of reasons why massage was helping a patient’s body whenever an illness occurred or whenever normal functions were disrupted.

One of the ancient doctors who included massage in medical books was Claudius Galenus who, influenced by Hippocrates, considered that massage was one of the most important tools a doctor had when providing treatment for his patients.
