Historically speaking, Shiatsu has been with us for a very long time. Treatments that included meridians, which were considered channels of energy, were used widely from Han dynasty and so forth. Even during the Neolithic, people used acupuncture as there were mummies discovered that had meridian points tattooed on their body.
So people have been aware of chi and energy channels for very long. In the 6th century, Japan started borrowing some of the Chinese healing methods and the theories that lead to the development of Shiatsu became widespread.
When it comes to the history of Shiatsu, one cannot omit mentioning Tokujiro Namikoshi-sensei, the founder of the therapy. He was born in 1905 and when he was only 7 years old he moved with his family in Shikoku Island, Japan where the weather conditions were extremely harsh.
At the same age he aided his mother who suffered rheumatism by performing massage on her as she developed the illness due to the harsh weather. He used his thumbs fingers and palms and tried to apply various degrees of pressure on her body.
After his thorough massage therapy it seems that she was completely cured. Due to the fact that there was no doctor in the area where they were living, he performed this treatment on many people and had great results.
After his success, he immersed himself into the art of Shiatsu and gained more knowledge creating a whole theory of the massage. He started a school of therapy where he applied his newly developed theories in order to further continue his research on Shiatsu.
His discoveries lead to recognition in 1964 by the Ministry of Health which considered that Shiatsu was an authentic method of treatment that was completely developed in Japan.
In his practice, he sought to understand the benefits of Shiatsu from a scientific point of view. He opened the first clinic that used Shiatsu as treatment in 1925 in Hokkaido and he used the principles and theories he had developed for so long to treat his patients.
He used a combination of many oriental therapies to treat his patients, including the Chinese therapy Anma, Do-in and Katsuho.
