Most people may go to a Shiatsu practitioner for a problem and find out that they have another underlying issue or a hidden illness. The massage therapist can check for irregularities on the skin, muscles and even whether a certain point on the body has an abnormal temperature; all these things can help them determine an illness a patient might suffer from.
If there are irregularities with your organs or even with the muscles, a therapist will be able to see it and apply the treatment through different techniques, thus diagnosing and applying therapy at the same time.
But applying mere pressure on the key points is not the purpose of Shiatsu. Specialists will apply a certain amount of pressure that will also be accompanied by a certain dynamic: for example, a key point might have a degree of pressure that can be applied quickly or slower. It all depends on the patient, the circumstances of his or her illness and also whether it is in an advanced state or not.
Usually an experienced Shiatsu therapist will be able to determine the type of treatment needed very quickly. Due to all these elements that need to be known, mastering the art of Shiatsu will take many years of experience.
Depending on the type of Shiatsu preferred, some clients will search for a therapist who has been schooled in a certain art of Shiatsu, for example Namikoshi’s style of Shiatsu which is very vigorous, while other may prefer another lighter approach.
It also depends on the client’s experience with Shiatsu as well as their comfort level and experiences with other practitioners in the past. A basic rule is the fact that a client should feel comfortable with their practitioner and the practitioner should do everything in their power to make their client as relaxed as they can before starting the treatment.
