History Of Shiatsu Massage Therapy 4

There are different types of Shiatsu as this practice has grown to take many forms according to each instructor and his or her unique method. Some of the forms of shiatsu are: Tsubo Shiatsu, Zen Shiatsu, Tao Shiatsu, Meridian Shiatsu, Macrobiotic Shiatsu, etc.

Meridian Shiatsu is a treatment based on the traditional Chinese medicine. Tadashi Izawa sensei was the one who published a book on this treatment in 1964 and the whole story behind this type of Shiatsu is the fact that it works with meridian points that represent the energy of certain parts of the body.

Another type of Shiatsu is the Tsubo Shiatsu which is one of the classic methods of doing Shiatsu. It is based on Tsubo points, a treatment that was developed with great knowledge of anatomy and physiology and it’s probably one of the newest types of Shiatsu. Tao Shiatsu is another form of Shiatsu that takes a more religious and spiritual approach for those who wish to follow that path.

Another type of Shiatsu is Oha Shiatsu, a technique that was mostly developed in USA and it can be characterized by less pressure and gaining balance in the body through stretching and manipulation.

Another interesting type of Shiatsu is the Macrobiotic Shiatsu, a theory that works hand in hand with the Macrobiotic Diet. Actually, Michio Kushi sensei was the person behind both of them as he practiced a therapy that was based both on diet Shiatsu but also prescribed meditation and Chinese Herbal Medicine.

There are many ways to perform Shiatsu and each therapist can find their own path and approach with experience. However, all Shiatsu massage therapists are required to have a few hundred hours of experience and lots of basic medical science.
