History Of Massage Therapy 4

In the Middle Ages, massage was used for various purposes, including abortions which required it to be performed with greater pressure and large movements. But there were many uses to massage in the middle ages including its great effects on the joints and muscles.

However, as the Christian influence increased, most medical knowledge, including massage therapy, was prohibited as the church considered it to be witchcraft. Women who provided any kind of health care were almost all the time accused of being witches. But there were hospitals, especially those that treated war victims, which allowed healthcare including massage therapy.

A big name in the medical field was Avicenna and he was one of those who kept and improved knowledge in the field of therapeutic massage. He often recommended baths, exercise and massage as a way to improve the health of his patients. He wrote hundreds of books on medical topics including remedial massage and considered it to be a great way to relieve pain but also improve the healing process.

In Renaissance times, people began breaking the barriers that were imposed by religion and a sort of resistance against religion dogmas began. This meant that all medical knowledge was passed from physician to physician which lead to the development of many areas in medicine including massage therapy.

Because medicine and art progressed almost at the same time in this period, a lot of artists drew human bodies and played an important role in the progress of medicine. Besides Leonardo Da Vinci, there was an important anatomical artist who helped develop massage therapy; his name was Andreas Vesalius and he was one of the physicians who were for the dissection of human bodies although it was illegal in most parts of Europe.

His character is very controversial as he used to steal bodies in order to study them. His writings and drawings included massage therapy guidelines and vast knowledge about the human body. The Gutenberg printing press also helped spread ideas and knowledge which lead to improvements in medicine.
